<나를 부르는 숲>, 과 <거의 모든 것의 역사>의 저자 빌브라이슨의 유럽 여행기. 그러나 절대 아름답고 낭만적인 모습의 유럽을 담은 책이 아니다. 저자는 특유의 유머를 양념으로 들고 유럽을 어슬렁거리며 다녀온 이야기를 적고 있다.
저자에게 여행은 무언가를 얻기 위해 노력하기보다 단순히 그 시간을 즐기기 위한 목적이 더 크다. 때문에 책은 유럽에 대한 정보보다 작가가 그린 인간적인 유럽이 담겨있다. 때론 특정 민족 집단과 그 문화에 대한 통념과 편견도 드러난다. 그러나 그의 독설과 풍자는 누군가의 심기를 불편하게 하지 않고 오히려 무릎을 치며 웃게 만든다.
특히 저자가 여행지에서 만난 사람들의 모습을 감상하는 글이 일품이다. 상냥하게 혼잣말을 중얼거리는 정신 나간 아줌마, 쌀쌀맞다 못해 경멸하는 눈빛으로 쳐다보는 웨이터, 말이라고는 통하지 않는 매표소 직원까지, 책에는 한결같이 현실적이고 인간적인 인물들이 등장한다.
작가가 지나온 길은 지구 최북단인 함메르페스트를 시작으로 이스탄불까지이다. 책 속에서 저자는 한번도 가보지 못한 대륙을 눈앞에 두고 갈등한다. 그러나 여행이란 어차피 집으로 향하는 길. 그는 다음 여행을 기약한다.
