끝없이 펼쳐진 광활한 사하라 사막 위를 지나는 한 대의 비행기. 창백한 모습의 한 여자와 남자가 타고 있는 그 비행기가 포격을 받고 추락하면서 영화가 시작된다.비행기에 타고 있던 알마시는 중화상을 입고 낙타에 실려 결국 야전 병원으로 가게 되고, 그 곳에서 병사들 사이에서 천사로 호칭받는 간호사 한나를 만나게 된다.

지리학자이자 탐험가였던 알마시 앞에 나타난 친구의 아내 캐서린이 들려주는 이야기가 그에게는 다소 의미심장하다. 현실과 과거의 회상이 교차하며 그와 캐서린과의 관계는 더욱 깊어지고, 결국 그들은 불륜에 빠지게 된다.카라바지오는 독일군에게 스파이 혐의로 엄지손가락을 잘린 후 그 복수로 그들을 죽이고 독일군에게 중요한 지도를 넘긴 알마시마저도 죽이러 오고, 이 무렵 간호사 한나는 폭탄 전문가 킵과 만나 사랑을 하게 되지만...
